Unions welcome signing of light rail contracts

Unions in Canberra have today welcomed the signing of the light rail contract with the Canberra Metro consortium.

The light rail project has strong community support, with the most recent UnionsACT commissioned opinion poll showing 62.7% support and 50.2% support in the southern suburbs of Canberra like Tuggeranong and Weston Creek.

Unions support the 3,500 new local jobs created by light rail, as well as the private sector economic stimulus that the project will drive.

The following quotes are attributable to Alex White, Secretary of UnionsACT:

“The signing of the light rail contracts is an important milestone to the creation of 3,500 new local jobs for Canberra.

“Unions welcome this important step, and we look forward to the construction of light rail commencing promptly.

“This project will be built by local workers, earning decent wages and working in safe conditions.

“The majority of the Canberra community support light rail, and it is time that the Liberal party stopped using jobs as a political football.”
