Unions to hold vigil at Mexican Embassy to mourn violence & deaths of students and teachers in Mexico

UnionsACT and the Australian Education Union will hold a vigil at the Mexican Embassy on Wednesday morning to mourn the deaths of 12 teachers and students in the Mexican city of Oaxaca.

The candle-light vigil comes following deadly clashes between protesting Mexican teachers and students, and security forces in the southern Mexican city. More than fifty people were injured and several education union officials have been arrested.

Teachers and students have been protesting against national education reforms that are enormously controversial.

The Australian Education Union, UnionsACT and the Education International union have condemned the abuse of violence by security forces, and will be asking the Mexican Ambassador to convey the profound concern of Australian educators at the violence to the Mexican government.

Vigil details:

Time: 7:45am-8am

Date: 29 June, 2016

Location: Mexican Embassy, 14 Perth Av, Yarralumla
